Behind the Scenes at the "Bayerisches Wörterbuch"

On January 22, FAU-EMLex had the opportunity to visit the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich – and with it, the office of the renowned Bayerisches Wörterbuch (Bavarian Dictionary). This remarkable dictionary project was launched over 100 years ago, and our visit provided fascinating insights into its ongoing development.

One of the highlights was watching the team at work as they compiled dictionary entries. From traditional handwritten index cards to modern digital data entry, the process seamlessly blends historical lexicography with contemporary methods.

Of course, no visit to Munich would be complete without some Bavarian hospitality. We rounded off the day with a well-deserved meal at the Augustinerkeller, enjoying a relaxed and convivial atmosphere.
