EMLex Welcome UMinho 2025/2026

It was a great pleasure to welcome the 1st year EMLex students of the Alain Rey Class to the University of Minho. The 9th of september 2025 marks the beginning of an exciting joint academic and cultural journey for Bulgansor Tsengelmaa (Mongolia), Marie Rollins (Finland) and Noel Gandarilla Blanco (Mexico). The welcome session was honoured by the presence of Zaza Shaorshadze, 2nd year student of the Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani Class, and Elizabeth Nakiwu, alumna of the Dieter Götz Class.

Warm Welcome to EMLex First-Year Students at USC

On Monday, 8 September, the EMLex coordinator María José Domínguez and programme manager Luke Akinremi hosted a welcome session for the first-year students whose home university is the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela.
During the session, students were warmly received and provided with essential information to help them settle into life and studies in Santiago. The session also offered an open space for questions, allowing students to clarify doubts and gain a better understanding of what to expect in the coming months.

Elizabeth Nakiwu Defends Thesis at University of Minho

Congratulations to Elizabeth Nakiwu (Dieter Götz Class) who successfully defended her thesis entitled 'Guidelines for designing user-friendly learner’s dictionaries tailored to the specific needs of Ugandan students', on the 28th of July, at the University of Minho in Braga. A heartfelt thank you to Professor Rufus Gouws (University of Stellenbosch) for his precious contribution as co-supervisor and to Professor Elsabé Taljard (University of Pretoria) for her insightful feedback as external examiner of the thesis.

Thesis Defence at USC

On Thursday, 17 July, Varvara Baranovskaia successfully defended her master’s thesis titled "Proposal for Creating an Online Dictionary of Idioms for Advanced Learners of Russian as a Foreign Language."
The thesis was supervised by Prof. Meike Meliss.

We warmly congratulate Varvara on this achievement and wish her all the best in her future endeavours.

EMLex Alumnus Michael Feidias Successfully Defends PhD on Language Regulation

Michael Feidias, EMLex alumni, has successfully defended his PhD thesis at the University of the Basque Country. His research focused on the typology of language regulation practices aimed at the revitalisation, maintenance, and promotion of endangered languages. Feidias previously completed his EMLex thesis at Károli University, where he explored the typology of online dictionary practices for endangered languages. His academic journey reflects a strong commitment to supporting linguistic diversity and the preservation of minority languages.

EMLex at the II Jornadas Hispanoamericanas de Lexicografía

David Huerta Meza, alumni of EMLex, working at El Colegio de México and Irene Renau (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, associated member) presents EMLex at the II Jornadas Hispanoamericanas de Lexicografía. The lecture was "El European Master in Lexicography: una oportunidad de formación superior en lexicografía". Organised by Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Lingüísticas y Literarias Andrés Bello, Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador; Instituto Superior de Lenguas, Facultad de Filosofía, Universidad Nacional de Asunción (online).

EMLex at high school in Santiago de Compostela

Two alumni - Luke Akinremi and Iván Arias-Arias-  and the  coordinator, María José Domínguez, presented the activity "Playing with words: Shall we talk about artificial intelligence and dictionaries?" to the high school students of Instituto Rosalía. The activity was part of the II Conference of Con-Science Experiences in Philology (II Xornadas de Experiencias Con-Ciencia en Filoloxía).

Human beings in the age of artificial intelligence

Lexicography, translation, and artificial intelligence from a intercultural perspective! Students conducted experiments linking lexicography, translation, and artificial intelligence. This enriching experience was enhanced by interesting debates and critical discussions that deepened linguistic and cultural understanding and fostered innovation. More information here!
